Abstract:

Peter Josef Schaeven (1885–1958), Generalsekretär der Kölner Zentrumspartei und der Kölner CDU, verkörperte wie kein anderer die Tradition des politischen Katholizismus in dieser Stadt. Schon in der Weimarer Republik wurde die Redegabe des Berufspolitikers ohne finanzielle Absicherung weithin bekannt, die dann aber in den 12 Jahren des Nationalsozialismus öffentlich verstummen mußte. 1945 sah er die Stunde einer großen, überkonfessionellen Union gekommen und organisierte als Generalsekretär die Kölner CDU. Die Fraktionsarbeit der Partei im Kölner Rat bestimmte er bis 1956 wesentlich als Vorsitzender. Der »Urkölner« setzte im Rat Akzente vor allem mit seinen Reden zu »kölschen« Themen wie Mundart, Brauchtum, Geschichte sowie demokratische Tradition und Bürgersinn in der alten Metropole Köln. Damit festigte er die Verwurzelung der Demokratie im lokalen Bereich bis zu seinem zeichenhaften Tod im Kölner Stadtrat am 6.Juli 1958.

Peter Josef Schaeven (1885–1958), secretary-general of the Zentrum (Centre-party) and the CDU (Christian Democratic Union) at Cologne, impersonated like no one else the tradition of political catholicism in that city. As early as during the Weimar Republic the eloquence of this professional politician, who had no financial security outside politics, became well known. But he had to fall silentduring the twelve years of national-socialism. In 1945 he saw that the hour had come for a wide interdenominational political party, and he organised Cologne's CDU as its secretary-general. As chairman he dominated the work of the CDU's parliamentary faction in the municipal council until 1956. First of all with his speeches on issues like dialect, customs, history, democratic tradition and civil sense he sat his special accents. By this he strengthened the rootening of democracy in his local sphere of life up to his meaningfull death in a session of the municipal council on July 6, 1958.
